Affection goes viral

Now, you have to do more than impress your partner's friends and parents.

You also have to impress the YouTube viewing audience.

Recently, this video of a wedding entrance dance to Chris Brown's "Forever" went viral.

Then, we got this video of a guy proposing to his girlfriend via a 60-person game of "telephone."

Sure, many people watch these videos for mere entertainment. But I think it's fair to assume some people -- women in particular -- watch the YouTube clips and raise their relationship expectations.

The clips contribute to a belief that true love is rooted in grand romantic gestures.

Their success is part of our fascination with publicizing love's most traditionally private aspects.

I'll admit I watched the "telephone" clip and guiltily slapped myself for wondering, "Why hasn't my boyfriend ever done anything cute enough to get on YouTube?"

Truth is, he has. I just didn't arm our friends with cameras during those moments.

And I don't know if my memories would be any fonder if we had the support of 13 million YouTube views.

Love on YouTube: Charming or cheesy?

Kelis Spotted Out with the Baby

Kelis was spotted out yesterday with her son Knight and she was all smiles, but if I was getting $55,000 a month I would be cheesin’ too.  I wonder what the baby looks like, I am sure he’s a cutie.

So Far No Team Wants Vick

michael-vick

If any NFL teams are interested in Michael Vick(notes), they’re not saying.

A day after the quarterback was conditionally reinstated to the league, only the Baltimore Ravens would directly acknowledge evaluating him.

“We’ve had long discussions about Michael Vick and we have a feeling about how he would impact our team and not impact our team,” coach John Harbaugh said Tuesday.

General manager Ozzie Newsome declined comment. Previously, he has said the Ravens have enough quarterbacks.

Other teams either refused comment or insisted they wouldn’t pick up the former Atlanta Falcons star, who served 18 months in federal prison for running a dogfighting ring and was released from home confinement on July 20.

Commissioner Roger Goodell said Monday that Vick can immediately take part in preseason practices, workouts and meetings and can play in the final two preseason games—if he can find a team.

Once the season begins, Vick may participate in all team activities except games, and Goodell said he would consider Vick for full reinstatement by Week 6 (Oct. 18-19) at the latest.

Two clubs that might have seemed like a logical destination—the Miami Dolphins and Cincinnati Bengals—said they wouldn’t pursue Vick.

What's up with sonograms?

You stare at the image mindlessly, wondering whether it requires a "that's so cute" or a "what's that?"

It is, of course, the sonogram.

Parents seem to embrace the blurry picture's significance, often posting it as their profile photo on social networking sites.

Sonogram aficionados, let me tell you something on behalf of (almost) all your childless friends:

We don't get it.

We don't understand how an unrecognizable portrait warrants a "cute." But we don't know what else to say. "Aww" borders on too phony, while "where's the head?" exposes our lack of membership in the Mommy & Me society.

So I'm sorry, child-bearing friends, but I'll never get you one of these cakes -- no matter how trendy it is to display your sonogram image in frosting.

I guess it's one of those things you regard differently when you're a parent.

Maybe.

Horse Molester At It Again

COLUMBIA, S.C. -- A South Carolina man was charged with having sex with a horse after the animal's owner caught the act on videotape, then staked out the stable and caught him at shotgun point, authorities said Wednesday.

But this wasn't the first time Rodell Vereen has been charged with buggery. He pleaded guilty last year to having sex with the same horse after owner Barbara Kenley found him in the same stable and was sentenced to probation and placed on the state's sex offender list.

Kenley said she noticed several weeks ago her 21-year-old horse Sugar was acting strange and getting infections again. She noticed things in the barn had been moved around - dirt piled up and bales of hay stacked near the horse's stall at her Lazy B Stables in Longs, about 20 miles northeast of Myrtle Beach.

Glenn Beck Says Obama Is Doesn't Like White People

NEW YORK (AP) — Fox News Channel commentator Glenn Beck said he believes President Obama is a racist. Beck made the statement during a guest appearance Tuesday on the Fox & Friends morning show. He said Obama has exposed himself as a person with "a deep-seated hatred for white people or the white culture."

His remarks came during a discussion of Obama's reaction to the arrest of Harvard University scholar Henry Louis Gates Jr. Gates is black and was arrested for disorderly conduct by a white policeman over a misunderstanding about a break-in at Gates' home.

An Obama spokesman, William Burton, said the White House had no comment on Beck.

Beck's statement was challenged on the air by Fox host Brian Kilmeade, who noted that most of the people who work for the nation's first black president are white.

Is American Idol Rigged???

American Idol

According to season eight finalist Ju’Not American Idol is definitely fixed.  Today while on a live chat with fans Ju’Not stated, “It's a fixed thing if I ever saw one.”   I wouldn’t be shocked if the show is actually fixed, but I wonder if Ju’Not is just a sore loser who is trying to keep his name in the public eye.  One thing is clear I see some lawsuits headed Ju’Not’s way.

Atlanta-Columbus dating

Atlanta has lost its spot as Forbes' No. 1 city for singles.

Taking its place? New York. Here's the really bad news: This year, Atlanta was ranked No. 6.

Talk about a downgrade. Read more about the list here.

I asked this question when I wrote about last year's rankings and I'll ask it again:

How many of you Columbus singletons regularly check out the meet market in Atlanta?

The city has an impressive nightlife and includes a lot of events that appeal to Columbus daters set on the "young professional" scene.

It's a good option for girls in Columbus who want a relationship, but won't go to the local clubs because of the deluge of military guys.

But at the same time, Atlanta's close -- but still 90 miles away.

If you meet someone there and start a serious relationship, there's going to be a decent amount of travel involved. And Atlanta traffic is hardly pleasant.

Tale of two cities

Here, one woman details how she broke up with her boyfriend and embraced a relationship with the real love of her life:

New York.

Her boyfriend lived in Minnesota. She lived in Manhattan. She hoped he'd move; he didn't want to.

So she chose New York over him. She summarizes her feelings beautifully:

When I was contemplating the end of my relationship with the ex, I thought about one of the home truths of writing, that you should go to whatever question scares you the most; that’s probably where the best material is. What, I wondered, if I did that with my life? What if I went after the very thing that frightened me?

The scariest thing I could think of was to choose a path that, however right, meant I could be alone for the rest of my life, not know the comfort and security of a partner, the sweetness of shared history, the imprint of a mattress that knows two bodies well.

When you're thinking about sharing your life with someone, people sometimes underestimate the importance of location. It's something that makes people shrug and say, "If you really love someone, you'll find a way to make it work."

But the feeling of being in love with a city is one of the most exhilarating sensations of all.

It's possible to live in the greatest place and be miserable.

However, when you really love where you live, you get a daily sense of belonging from the people who surround you.

Even if you don't know their names.

Katherine Jackson’s Request for Michael’s Estate Info Gets Rejected

katherine%20jackson

The legal team for Michael Jackson's mother on Tuesday asked a judge for the power to press the administrators of her son's estate for more information ahead of a key hearing next week, but the judge rebuffed the effort.

Lawyers for Katherine Jackson on Tuesday requested the authority to interview attorney John Branca and former music executive John McClain this Friday, as well as demand they produce business contracts and other documents related to the late pop star.

Her lawyers argued in a court filing that the information was "potentially crucial" to a hearing set for Monday that could determine the permanent representatives of Jackson's estate, which is estimated to be worth more than $500 million.

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Mitchell Beckloff put off dealing with their request until Monday, effectively quashing it.

Google Goggles

You haven't even met the guy, and you're already convinced he's a catch.

Why?

You found his resume online -- with the same Internet search that yielded photos of him saving starving children in India.

Congratulations, your dating judgment has been impaired by Google Goggles.

I didn't coin the term. That honor goes to relationship goddesses Em and Lo, who offer this definition:

Google goggles are the rose-tinted glasses through which you view a new paramour after an exhaustive Internet search on them yields very impressive results.

When we think of Googling our dates, it's usually in the context of exposing a fatal flaw: say, a MySpace page that indicates a lingering attachment to an ex.

But in the dating world, Internet background checks can just as easily reveal a history of accomplishments that inflates our perception of our partner.

It takes the old "good on paper" line to a new level, offering concrete evidence of potential. Enough to make us enter a date with higher expectations.

And, strangely, a higher chance of disappointment.

Marry me!

The author of this CNN article is either a master motivator or a master manipulator.

He asserts that men really want to get married. In fact, some of them fantasize about it. An excerpt:

Somewhere along the way, marriage and masculinity became mutually exclusive. But that stands in stark contrast to the dozens of men I spoke with, who admitted -- no, insisted -- they've fantasized about popping the question, getting married, even having a wedding.

I think the belief that all men go to the altar kicking and screaming is a slight exaggeration.

But in popular culture, it's rare to find an image of a man who's overtly excited about his wedding ceremony.

Do men fantasize about marriage?

Kim Kardashian and Reggie Bush

So everyone's talking about the Kim Kardashian/Reggie Bush breakup.

Here's how an anonymous source explains the split: "This is just a case of conflicting schedules and their lives going in different directions."

Check out The Frisky's reaction to that justification:

What a cop-out excuse! If two people really want to be together, then they’ll find a way to make it work.

I don't necessarily agree.

In relationships, I think one of the worst feelings ever is realizing that you and your partner want different things out of life.

The realization can pertain to differences in choices like where you want to live, what you want out of your career and when you want to start a family.

When those differences become apparent, it's hard because your partner hasn't really done anything "bad." He or she has simply dreamed of a life different than your own.

I agree that love requires some level of compromise. I don't, however, think your relationship should make you compromise your identity or your dreams.

Yes, two people can really want to be together.

But sometimes, making it work isn't worth what you lose in the process.

Free Tuesday show!

The local rockers from Boneheadz perform a free show tonight at the Shanty Shack, 4475 Warm Springs Road.

Music starts at 7 p.m. Arrive early and you'll have a chance to score a free dinner.

The show is part of the bar's Muldoon's Tuesday promotion, which attempts to recreate the atmosphere of longtime Columbus hangout Muldoon's. The Veterans Parkway hot spot was replaced by H2O about a year ago.

Black News: Jackson’s Doctor Gave Him a Strong Drug

Michael Jackson's personal physician, Dr. Conrad Murray, administered a powerful drug that authorities believe killed the singer, a source with knowledge of the investigation confirmed to CNN on Monday.

Dr. Conrad Murray was with Michael Jackson on the day that he died.

Dr. Conrad Murray was with Michael Jackson on the day that he died.

Murray, a Texas-based cardiologist, allegedly gave Jackson the anesthetic propofol -- commonly known by the brand name Diprivan -- in the 24 hours before he died, the source said.

The doctor's attorneys in a statement Monday said they wouldn't comment on "rumors, innuendo or unnamed sources." In the past, they have said Murray never prescribed or administered anything that could have killed the pop star.

Murray was the doctor who was at Jackson's home when the pop star died on June 25.

Last week, Texas authorities searched Murray's Houston medical office and storage unit, looking for "evidence of the offense of manslaughter," according to court documents.

Among the items removed from Murray's office were a computer; 27 tablets of phentermine, a prescription-strength appetite suppressant; 1 tablet of clonazepam, an anti-anxiety medication; and some Rolodex cards.

It’s A Wrap: Kim K. & Reggie Bush Break Up

I must say I am a little shocked to hear this news I actually thought that maybe they would have made it down the aisle, but I guess I was wrong.  According to Kim’s publicist the cause of the split was their conflicting schedules, but there are rumors circulating that the split was due to Reggie cheating.  HMM…I wonder which it was, probably a little of both.

The exercise date

In relationships, few things make me happier than this pickup line:

"Want to go to the gym together?"

It's not as enticing as a shopping invite or a fancy dinner. But having a workout partner can make an otherwise routine task a little more exciting.

What's more, it's nice to date someone who has the discipline to take care of his or her body. Maintaining a regular workout regimen says a lot about your ability to commit to something and follow through.

However, I have to admit that more often than not, an exercise date can do more harm than good.

Very few couples operate on the same levels of athleticism.

You're in for a rude awakening when an innocent run with your boyfriend turns into a sweat-inducing installment of Sprinting With Satan.

Keep that possibility in mind when you check out this article, "How to go on an exercise date."

And here's a gallery of partner yoga poses. But don't get too optimistic about completing them successfully.

Unless your significant other considers a broken arm foreplay.

Octomom Inks A Reality Show

Octomom

Just when I thought I was done hearing about all the foolishness that involved Nadya Suleman aka “Octomom” I find out that she is getting a reality TV show deal for $250,000.  Nadya signed a deal with a European TV Company to star in a reality show with her 14 children for three years.  According to the contract she will receive $125,00 for 36 days of shooting for the first year, $75,000 for 21 days in the second year, and $50,000 for 14 days of shooting in the third year.  As required by California law 15% of the money will be put into a trust fund for the children, so at least the kids will benefit.

Crazy possessive

Happy Monday! Over the weekend I discovered this song, Kaci Battaglia's "Crazy Possessive."

In the chorus, she repeatedly threatens to beat you up if you call or touch her man again.

In relationships, some degree of possessiveness can be flattering. It's nice to have someone who wants you exclusively as his/her own, regardless of how long you've been dating.

I've dated guys who have just shrugged with disinterest when I've mentioned being hit on by other people. Honestly, that reaction kind of hurts.

But romantic possession is best received in small doses.

Everyone has met That Girl who's convinced that all of her friends want to hook up with her boyfriend.

Strangely, it seems like those girls are also the ones who date the least desirable men.

I once knew a girl who would shower her boyfriend with the most disgusting PDAs whenever other women were in the near vicinity. The guy had a widespread reputation as a sleaze, not to mention some pretty grotesque hygiene habits.

The bottom line? Extreme possessiveness is a sign of insecurity.

The problem isn't a world of dirty skanks trying to holler at your man.

It's you.

Beyonce in Talk to Stay in Las Vegas

Beyonce and her mama Mrs. Knowles are in talk with Wynn Hotel in Las Vegas to schedule Beyonce to do a year round tour there for 3 years, similar to those of Celine Dion and Toni Braxton.  As of now nothing is set in stone and personally I don’t see this happening anytime in the near future because Beyonce’s career is to big to be scheduled in just one city.

Tyler Perry's "I Can Do Bad All By Myself" Movie Trailer

Here's the trailer for Tyler Perry's next movie "I Can Do Bad All By Myself". The release date is Sept. 11, 2009. Looks like it will be a good one!! I'm thinking the soundtrack may be good as well.

The movie synopsis, by Cinematical, is:

Three delinquent children loot the home of the lovable-but-firm Madea (Perry), and she takes matters into her own hands. She delivers them into the care of their only relative, the hard-drinking, nightclub-singing April, played by Academy Award-nominated Taraji P. Henson. Aunt April sponges off her married boyfriend and wants nothing to do with the kids, but things start to change when a good-looking Mexican immigrant (Adam Rodriguez) moves into her basement.

Chris! I want more Ass-whoopins!

It has been reported the Chris Brown and Rihanna checked into the same hotel in separate rooms and were seen taking decoy vehicles around New York.  Also, they are allegedly recording a duet together soon.

So, either these people are engaged in wishful thinking, or Rihanna likes the fact that Chris has a little Ike Turner in him.  Hope she does like J-Lo and takes boxing lessons! LOL

Investigations Being Done in Jackson Case Leaks

Investigators are looking into whether employees at the Los Angeles County coroner's office illegally leaked information about Michael Jackson's death probe to the news media, according to a sheriff's spokesman.

Police stand outside the Los Angeles County Coroner's Office when Michael Jackson's body was there in June.

Police stand outside the Los Angeles County Coroner's Office when Michael Jackson's body was there in June.

Vivid descriptions of Jackson's corpse, which was in the coroner's custody for an autopsy, were published by tabloid newspapers in the days after his death.

The Los Angeles County Supervisors office on Friday asked the sheriff to conduct a "preliminary inquiry," which will determine whether there is enough evidence to launch a full investigation, said Steve Whitmore, a sheriff's spokesman.

Whitmore did not provide details on what prompted the request.

The Los Angeles Times quoted Los Angeles County Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas as saying his office called the sheriff's department after reports that coroner's employees not involved in the Jackson death probe had viewed his death certificate in the office database.

Black News: E. Lynn Harris Dies at 54

E. Lynn HarrisJohn Bazemore/Associated PressThe author E. Lynn Harris.

Updated | 2:48 p.m. E. Lynn Harris, the best-selling author of novels that addressed questions of identity and sexuality among black men, has died, his publicist told The Associated Press. He was 54.

According to his official biography at his Web site, Mr. Harris was born in Flint, Mich. and raised in Little Rock, Ark. At the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville, he was the school’s first black male Razorbacks cheerleader and was a lifelong fan of the team. He sold computers for a living until he self-published his first novel, “Invisible Life,” in 1991; it was picked up by Anchor Books in 1994, spawning a prolific writing career spanning ten more novels, from “Just As I Am” in 1994, to “Basketball Jones,” published in January, as well as a 2004 memoir, “What Becomes of the Brokenhearted.”

In a review of Mr. Harris’s 2006 novel “I Say a Little Prayer” in The New York Times Book Review, Troy Patterson wrote that Mr. Harris “has helped bring taboo topics — like closeted black men indulging their sexuality ‘on the down low’ — into mainstream conversation.” From his debut with “Invisible Life”, Mr. Patterson wrote that Mr. Harris offered a writing style that “was smoothly paced, and the prose occasionally opened up on Fitzgerald-lite moments of sparkling sentiment.”

My heart, my sandwich

I am a conscientious perfectionist devoted to my work, home or relationship.

How do I know that? I ordered a BLT for lunch.

Results of this recent study say sandwich preference is a major indicator of a pair's romantic compatibility.

As a BLT fan, I'm supposed to be most compatible with people who enjoy seafood salad sandwiches. So hit me up, shrimp lovers.

Click here to see what your sandwich choice says about your love life. Warning: It's not a good day to be a ham and cheese fan.

I agree with this Jezebel blogger: "However, even if it is foolish, studies like this do seem to say something about ourselves, not so much our romantic style or how introverted we are, but about the need to fall into one of eight simple categories."

This specific study aside, taste in food can affect romantic attraction.

I think one of the sexiest qualities ever is a willingness to immerse yourself in Moroccan food one day and Thai food the next.

It reflects an adventurous spirit that in many cases extends to other aspects of your relationship.

National Tequila Day

During my standard morning review of Google Trends, I learned today is National Tequila Day.

So yes, you now have one more reason to leave work early and grab a Friday afternoon -- er, evening -- margarita. If I was back home in California, I'd celebrate here.

Ah, tequila. We've shared such a sweet love affair. I can always count on you to fuel phone calls that lead to three days of awkward silence. Thank you.

I also have to express my gratitude for the role you played in my 21st birthday celebration. It was so kind of the bartender to give me a mix of tequila and Tabasco sauce as my very first shot of the night.

But I guess things could be worse.

For many of my friends, tequila is That Liquor. You know, the one you swear off for life because of a particularly horrendous hangover. The one that generates a gag reflex with its bottle alone.

Tequila and I have had our ups and downs, but it's still on my good side.

Rum? Not so much.

Give me your best tequila stories.

Is Beyonce a Fraud???

I Am...Sasha Fierce

According to the New York Post Beyonce has been lying about some of the tracks she has written, and that she actually paid others to say she wrote them.  Read what the Post is reporting below.

Ms. Jay-Z has been called out by two different R&B ladies for not writing songs she claims are hers. According to Rap-Up magazine, Chrisette Michele revealed that Beyonce's hit single "Ego" was originally meant for her own album "Epiphany" but she decided to hand it over to the Queen B. And here is the shady part: The track is credited to producer Elvis Williams, Beyonce Knowles and Harold Lilly ... not vocal Goddess Chrisette. (Update: Beyonce was not mentioned by Christette as a writer on "Ego" when offered the song, which she turned down but did not write).

Michele says, "It was really scary for me to release my pen because I had written my first album myself. You don't know if they're going to be able to capture your voice the same way that you captured it yourself."

Something about these rumors seem a little sketchy because it is pretty obvious that someone is a Beyonce hater.

I got scared

Men fear proposing marriage just about as much as they fear sharks, according to the results of this recent survey.

I don't know what to make of the findings, aside from a slight suspicion the survey will bolster the popularity of my least favorite breakup line EVER:

"I got scared of the relationship."

The logic doesn't make sense, but many girls will buy it. So much, in fact, that "I got scared of the relationship" has grown to often work as a reasonable justification for cheating.

Girls think the line is cute. Sensitive. And, most importantly, an indication of real emotional investment.

Unfortunately, none of those elements are true. "Getting scared" translates into everything from "getting bored" to "getting attracted to somebody else."

So the next time you hear it, call your date out.

If the angry confrontation comes as a surprise, you know what to do.

Just say you got scared.

Kelis Racks Up in Child Support

Kelis and Nas

Now last week I told you all about Nas not paying the $5,000 a month in child support to Kelis and that she was complaining that he only gave her a gift certificate for a few thousand dollars.  Well now the baby is here and the entire situation has changed.  Kelis has been awarded $55,000 a month in child support from Nas and in addition to this he must pay for the baby’s nurse, prenatal expenses, medical insurance and $35,000 to Kelis’ lawyer.  DAMN who would of ever thought that Nas had bank like that???  I see him filing for bankruptcy some time in the near future.

MTV's 16 and Pregnant

Does anyone else watch "16 and Pregnant" on MTV?

No? You wish MTV would go back to playing music videos? Hmm. Well, this is awkward.

Much to the chagrin of my boyfriend, who has sacrificed far too many "Futurama" reruns to satisfy my reality TV addiction, I love "16 and Pregnant."

I'm surprised by how many people think the show is trashy. True, watching a teenage cheerleader go into labor isn't necessarily a vehicle for a life-changing inspiration.

But from a filming standpoint alone, the show is done really well. The author of this interesting Salon piece, "I actually was 16 and pregnant," notes that a good portion of the show is filmed with participants' hand held flip cameras -- minimizing the presence of outside filming crews and creating an honesty you don't usually get out of reality TV.

From its onset, the show -- a partnership between MTV and the National Campaign to Reduce Teen and Unwanted Pregnancy -- was designed to deter teen viewers from getting pregnant.

I agree with this DoubleX writer: Even if they watch every episode, teens are more likely to be influenced by their family and friends.

That doesn't mean the show is without purpose. At the very least, it reminds us as viewers to form our real-life conclusions carefully.

And know that every pregnant teenager is more than her bulky sweatshirts.

Reasons Why Nas and Kelis’ Baby Will Need Therapy

First off let me correct the fact that I said Kelis had her baby two days ago, apparently she was in labor for 3 days and did not give birth to her son Knight until last night.

10) Your stepsister had her baby seat skeeted on by Jay-Z and he made a song about it.
9) Your parents had sex with blindfolds and made a song about it.
8 ) Your friends will have both of these songs on their iPods and torture you with them.
7) Your uncle’s name is Jungle He will swear to you he is a rapper. Don’t believe him.

6) Your dad can’t drive but owns many cars. You will be his chauffeur one day.
5) Your birth will be on Twitter.
