People perceive him to be the bad guy who is taking Conan’s job from him.
Apparently that is not the whole truth, and the network wanted to put Conan on one half hour later with Jay doing a half hour show immediately prior, and Conan said he would not do that.
That was when the Tonight show was again offered to Jay.
